CLST 301- Lecture 1

What will I learn in this course?

  1. How to read medical and biological terminology.

e.g. phlebometritis phleb-o-metr-it is

"an inflammation of a vein in the uterus"

  1. How to translate lay terminology into medical or biological terminology.

[an inflammation of] [a vein] [in the uterus]

Phleb-o-metr-itis

  1. The background of some of the Greek and Latin terminology

e.g.

metr- "mother" [in Greek]

vas- "container" [in Latin]

The planet Uranus is related to the palate of your mouth.

  1. Why we use Greek and Latin for Medical and biological terminology in the first place.

Tutorials do not begin until the week of Jan 18th- there are only 6 tutorials

First part of the term ( to midterm exam)

Module 5: nervous system

Module 6: respiratory system

Course Evaluation:

25% Tutorial Work ( 6 tutorials per term)

-vocabulary quiz each tutorial

-exercise(s) each tutorial

-a couple of take-home assignments each term

25% Midterm exam

-held during the tutorial hour

-more information on format posted later this month

-week before reading break

50% Final Exam

-2.5 hour exam
